Absence Procedures

Attendance in school significantly impacts a student’s academic success, and families play a crucial role in ensuring students make it to school on time each day. The Virginia Department of Education asks schools to report chronic absenteeism each year, which is included in their School Quality Profile. As in previous years, we ask that parents call the school before 10:00 am to report their child’s absence. Absent students must bring a note on the first day they return to school stating the reason(s) for their absence(s). Notes are held as legal records of student absences. Please assist us by following these policies throughout the school year so that we can continue to provide our students with a safe learning environment and ensure they receive the exceptional instruction our teachers provide.

Adult Education Opportunities

The Capital Region Adult Education Program provides services and workforce opportunities to adults desiring to further their educational pursuits. If you are interested in obtaining your GED, reading or math instruction, or other workforce skills, please click here.

Advance College Academy (ACA) Applications

Advance College Academy (ACA) is a dual enrollment program between Goochland High School and Reynolds Community College that allows students to earn a transferable associate of science degree in social science while completing a high school advanced studies diploma. ACA applications are open for current 9th and 10th-grade students until Friday, September 30th, 2022. Previously admitted students need not reapply.

To be eligible for ACA admission, a student must complete Algebra II no later than 10th grade, a third year of language by the end of junior year, and be capable of maintaining a 3.0 high school GPA.

Attendance Awareness Month

September is Attendance Awareness Month. During September, we highlight the importance of school attendance and its impact on student success. When attendance is improved, so are academic achievements and graduation rates. Join us in talking with your students this month about the importance of regular school attendance and reflecting on your expectations for their attendance. Thank you in advance for your support!

Boys Basketball Open Gym

Boys Basketball open gyms will begin on Tuesday, September 6th. They will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:15 pm. Participants must have a completed VHSL physical form turned in to Coach Gordon or Coach Fowler. Everyone must also complete the concussion test before participating. An information meeting will be held in Coach Gordon's room (I-202) on Tuesday, September 6th. Players must see Coach Gordon for a pass before the meeting. Please contact Coach Gordon if you have any questions (prgordon@glnd.k12.va.us).

Calendars

Please reference the 2022-23 GHS Day 1/Day 2 Calendar to know which classes will meet on any given day. Parents and students may also want to reference the 2022-23SY GCPS Calendar for more information.

Class Meetings

Our administrative team hosted class meetings last week to discuss updates to GCPS and GHS policies and procedures. The presentation will be posted in Canvas later this week for those who wish to review the information with their child. We hope that by sharing our expectations early, our students will meet our high expectations for excellence. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Early Dismissal Procedures

Students wishing to leave school early without a parent present must bring a WRITTEN excuse signed by a parent by 10:00 am the day of the early dismissal. In the case of an emergency, parents may call in and ask for administrative approval for an early release over the phone. Please assist us by following these policies throughout the school year so that we can continue to provide our students with a safe learning environment and ensure they receive the exceptional instruction our teachers provide.

GCPS Closed: Labor Day

As a reminder, Goochland County Public Schools will be closed on Monday, September 5th, for the Labor Day Holiday. We hope you enjoy your three-day weekend.

MacBook Air Insurance Payments

All students should sign the AUP form on PowerSchool and can pay the $30 Macbook Air insurance fee using the Online School Payment System. This fee covers most laptop repairs and a one-time replacement of lost or damaged GCPS-issued technology. Without insurance coverage, all repairs and replacement costs are the responsibility of the student/parent.

Senior Projects

Seniors will receive information on the Goochland High School senior project this week through their government classes. Students will receive a packet containing the outline of the project, a project proposal form that must be filled out and returned no later than October 14th, 2022, and a timesheet to log their hours. Students must complete 30 hours of community service-oriented work by mid-May. Please note that students will not be permitted to walk at the GHS graduation ceremony in the spring if they do not complete their senior project. Also, note that Education for Employment and Blue Ridge Virtual Governor's School students complete a separate senior project through those experiences.

Please contact Alexa Bolt at abolt@glnd.k12.va.us with any questions.

Student Drivers

We will begin ticketing cars without a GHS Student Parking Pass beginning on September 6th.  Student drivers who still need to purchase a parking pass should pay the parking fee using the Online School Payment system, complete the parking application form and student parking contract, and provide proof of driver’s license when turning in these forms to the main office.

Additionally, student drivers are not permitted to return to their cars during the school day without administrative approval. Please contact Ms. Hudak (amhudak@glnd.k12.va.us) if you have any questions.

Tardy Sweeps

We will once again implement random tardy clean sweeps to ensure that our students report to class on time and maximize our instructional time.

  • After the tardy bell rings, we will announce that we will begin a tardy clean sweep over the PA.

  • All teachers will close and lock their doors once they hear the announcement.

  • Teachers will not allow students to enter the classroom and direct them to the cafeteria.

  • Teachers will not allow students to exit their classrooms during the clean sweep to enable our administrators to process the students caught in it.

  • Once administrators have swept through the hallways and bathrooms, they will assign lunch detention to any students caught in the clean sweep without a valid GHS pass.

  • After administrators complete the disciplinary process, students caught in the sweep will return to their classrooms with a pass from administration.

  • Once students have a tardy clean sweep pass, teachers will allow them into their classrooms.

  • Once the tardy clean sweep is over, administrators will make another announcement to inform everyone that the sweep has concluded.

Parents, please discuss the importance of arriving at school and class on time with your child. We look forward to continued partnerships with our students, parents, and community members to uphold the standards of excellence at Goochland High School.
