Absence Procedures

Attendance in school significantly impacts a student’s academic success, and families play a crucial role in ensuring students make it to school on time each day. The Virginia Department of Education asks schools to report chronic absenteeism each year, which is included in their School Quality Profile. As in previous years, we ask that parents call the school before 10:00 am to report their child’s absence. Absent students must bring a note on the first day they return to school stating the reason(s) for their absence(s). Notes are held as legal records of student absences. Please assist us by following these policies throughout the school year so that we can continue to provide our students with a safe learning environment and ensure they receive the exceptional instruction our teachers provide.

All-Night Graduation

The All-Night Graduation Committee (ANG) would like to thank The Goochland Restaurant and Dunkin Donutsfor providing breakfast for our  Seniors at the Senior Sunrise Breakfast. Many thanks to the parents and students who came out so early to kick off their Last First day of School. The event was a huge success.

To help stay connected for future events through ANG, please visit this link and fill out the ANG survey. Be sure to ask your child to help answer, “What fun events would you like to see” and have them follow ANG on social media. If you have any questions, please contact our ANG Board directly at Goochlandang@gmail.com.

Applications For Student Leadership Openings

Attention freshmen, are you interested in becoming a student leader for your grade? Do you want to show that you have school spirit and leadership skills to inspire others? If so, you should consider running for class office! We are looking for four freshmen who want to lead their classmates through teamwork and ingenuity. Positions available are President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Elected students serve on the GHS Student Advisory Committee (StAC) and meet with Dr. Collier every month to offer their thoughts and suggestions to improve the school climate at GHS. Please see Ms. Tate (rtate@glnd.k12.va.us) in room E163 (Social Studies hallway) if you have questions or wish to apply.

Athletics and Activities

Please visit www.GoochlandBulldogs.com for up-to-date schedule information. Many of these events can be streamed live at www.NFHSNetwork.com. Feel free to reach out to Joe Fowler (jfowler@glnd.k12.va.us) if you have any questions or need more information.

Attendance Awareness Month

As we approach September at the end of this week, GHS wants to inform families that September is Attendance Awareness Month. During September, we take time to highlight the importance of school attendance and its impact on students' future successes. When attendance is improved, so are academic achievements and graduation rates. Join us in talking with your students this month about the importance of regular school attendance and reflecting on your expectations for their attendance. Thank you in advance for your support!

Boys Basketball Open Gym

Boys Basketball open gyms will begin on Tuesday, September 6th. They will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:15 pm. Participants must have a completed VHSL physical form turned in to Coach Gordon or Coach Fowler. Everyone must also complete the concussion test before participating. An information meeting will be held in Coach Gordon's room (I-202) on Tuesday, September 6th. Players must see Coach Gordon for a pass before the meeting. Please contact Coach Gordon if you have any questions (prgordon@glnd.k12.va.us).

Calendar

Please reference the 2022-23 GHS Day 1/Day 2 Calendar to know which classes will meet on any given day. Parents and students may also want to reference the 2022-23SY GCPS Calendar for more information.

Calling All Local Veterans

Mrs. Tate, one of our social studies teachers, is putting together a veterans project for her ACA U.S. History students. Local veterans willing to volunteer to be interviewed by 11th graders are encouraged to join. Veterans can join via the Google Form on the GHS Veterans Project website or by emailing Mrs. Tate (rtate@glnd.k12.va.us).

Class Meetings

This week administrators will host class meetings during Bulldog Block. During these meetings, students will hear updates on disciplinary procedures, learn about some of our safety protocols, and hear more about the fantastic student services we provide at GHS. They will also have an opportunity to ask questions and have them answered directly by school administrators. We believe in transparency with disciplinary and safety procedures, and we look forward to another successful year inside and out of the classroom!

Early Dismissal Procedures

Students wishing to leave school early without their parents present must bring a WRITTEN excuse signed by their parents by 10:00 am the day of the early dismissal. In the case of an emergency, parents may call in and ask for administrative approval for an early release over the phone. Please assist us by following these policies throughout the school year so that we can continue to provide our students with a safe learning environment and ensure they receive the exceptional instruction our teachers provide.

MacBook Air Insurance Payments

All students should sign the AUP form on PowerSchool and can pay the $30 Macbook Air insurance fee using the Online School Payment System. This fee covers most laptop repairs and a one-time replacement of lost or damaged GCPS-issued technology. Without insurance coverage, all repairs and replacement costs are the responsibility of the student/parent.

Parking Fees and Registration

Students currently have access to purchase their parking pass on the GHS online payment system. Students must also complete the GHS Parking Contract and the VDOE Parking Registration forms before being issued a parking pass. Completed forms can be emailed to Mrs. Hudak (amhudak@glnd.k12.va.us) or dropped off in the main office. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license is a requirement to receive a pass and can be submitted during student lunches during the first week of school. Passes will be issued to students who have completed the process starting the week of August 29th.  Parking violation stickers will be administered to those without parking passes after Labor Day.

SAT

Goochland High School is a testing site for the SAT on October 1st. The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions. The deadline to register for the October seating is September 2nd. Students should register for the SAT through College Board at satsuite.collegeboard.org. GHS will also be a testing site for the March 11th, 2023 SAT administration.

We hope students strongly consider testing in their homeschool as it can reduce stress factors through being in a familiar setting. Please contact Dr. Stacey Rainbolt (srainbolt@glnd.k12.va.us) if you have any questions.

Student Drivers

Student drivers may drive to school for the first two weeks without a pass. Within the first two weeks of school, we will distribute parking passes to those who have completed the registration form and paid the parking fee in OSP. Additionally, student drivers are not permitted to return to their cars during the school day without administrative approval. Please contact Ms. Hudak (amhudak@glnd.k12.va.us) if you have any questions.

Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up

As a reminder, the high school student drop-off and pick-up area is located in the back stadium parking lot. Take advantage of the short line in the back instead of joining the middle school drop-off line in the front parking lot.

Supervision After School

Students are asked to leave campus before evening activities because we cannot provide supervision after school. An adult must accompany any student who wants to stay after school. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

Teen Driver Seminar

Attention teen drivers! After the success of their first teen drivers' seminar in May, the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office has decided to host another for community teen drivers on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, at Goochland High School from 9:30 am - 1:00 pm. The class will consist of two parts of instruction. The first will be taught in the classroom, and the second part will consist of several mock traffic stops and golf cart driving courses. Participants must be Goochland residents, high-school students under 18, and possess a minimum of a learner's permit. As a bonus, lunch will be provided to all participants.

Please contact Deputy Scott Leabough (sleabough@goochlandva.us) if you have any questions or need assistance with registration.
