Balanced Calendar 2023-24SY

For more than a year, our school community has engaged in discussions about the possibility of adopting a balanced instructional calendar designed to provide additional learning opportunities for students while also allowing for periodic breaks throughout the year to allow both students and staff the opportunity to focus on their health and wellness. This past fall, our school division conducted multiple public meetings designed to capture feedback about this concept. Since then, our team has reflected on the feedback received from our students, staff, and families and created an improved version of the balanced calendar for your consideration.

Highlights of Version 2.0 of the proposed balanced calendar include:

  • IF approved, this calendar would be effective for the 2023-2024 school year, allowing our families and staff ample time to plan for this change.
  • OPTIONAL intercessions for both students and staff.
  • There is an opportunity for 23 additional instructional days for those who participate in the intersessions.
  • One week of intersession in October versus two weeks.
  • We would start the school year two weeks earlier than our current calendar. This provides for a one-week break in October and a two-week break in March/April for those who choose.
  • Remote learning day on Election Day in 2023 to allow our schools to be used as polling locations.
  • Opportunities for professional workdays for teachers throughout the year
  • Workday for teachers before the winter break in 2023.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your thoughts about our revised Balanced Instructional Calendar. The survey provides an anonymous opportunity to share your feedback to help inform a recommendation for the instructional calendar for the 2023-2024 school year. A DRAFT of Version 2.0 of the 2023-2024SY Balanced Calendar is here

Thank you for taking a few minutes to share your valuable feedback through this BRIEF survey.

Dress Code Reminders

As we head into the warmer months, we would like to remind our students and their parents of our GCPS Dress Code. Parents, we ask that you speak with your child about this policy, as we will ramp up enforcement of the policy this spring. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, and thank you in advance for your cooperation.

GCPS Sense of Belonging Survey

Please find a preview copy of the high school version of the GCPS Sense of Belonging and Inclusion Survey intended to be administered during school in the window of April 19th -29th. The survey aims to provide input on how GCPS is doing towards meeting our annual goals established per policy JFHB/GBAA. All high schoolers will participate in this survey, but please complete this form if you want to opt your child out of this survey.

We look forward to collecting this data and analyzing the survey results.
