ACA Teacher Preparation Path

Are you a sophomore or freshman who is interested in knowing more about the slight difference between the standard ACA degree and the ACA Teacher Preparation path? Thinking about taking Teachers for Tomorrow as a class next year? If you answered yes to either of these questions, come by the Learning Commons on Tuesday, February 8th, during Bulldog Block to meet with Dr. Fowler and Ms. Ely. They'd love to chat with you about your options!

Please visit www.GoochlandBulldogs.com for up-to-date schedule information. Many of these events can be streamed live at www.NFHSNetwork.com. Feel free to reach out to Joe Fowler (jfowler@glnd.k12.va.us) if you have any questions or need more information.

Black History Month

In addition to the instructional activities taking place in students’ core academic classes, students in our African American History class are completing a cross-curricular poster assignment for Black History Month. The goal of this project is to highlight contributors to African American history and American history that stems from both African American and Afro-Latin heritage. Students will create posters with a scannable QR-code that allows their classmates to answer a trivia question about a specific contributor. We will cap off the month with a student-planned Black History Month Assembly with student performances from our band, chorus, and theater arts students featuring African Americans whose influence is far-reaching in the arts. Students will also hear original poetry from a GHS student and have the opportunity to win prizes during a game show.

We are extremely excited to celebrate the accomplishments of these great American heroes!

Calendar Update

Due to the snowstorm during the first week of January, our division lost five valuable instructional days. In order to gain back some of our lost instructional time, both Friday, February 18th, and Monday, March 21st will now be instructional days for students. Schools were previously scheduled to be closed for students on these days for teacher professional workdays.

At this time, Monday, February 21st, is still scheduled to be a holiday for both teachers and students. However, should we miss another school day, Monday, February 21st, will also become an instructional day.

DCJS Survey

In cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, Goochland High School is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions of students, teachers, and staff on February 18th, 2022, during Block 3. The purpose of this survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in our school. As stated in a School Messenger on January 10th, 2022, the survey is voluntary, and your child can decide not to participate at any time.  If you do not wish for your child to participate, please contact the school office as soon as possible. You may call the front office at 556-5322, send in a written note, or email Catherine Richards (GHS survey coordinator) at crichards@glnd.k12.va.us.

Scheduling 2022-2023SY

The PowerSchool Parent Portal has opened for students to make course requests in PowerSchool for the 2022-2023 school year.  School Counselors have met with each English class and most students have already submitted requests. Changes to course requests can be made on PowerSchool by students and parents until Wednesday, February 9th, 2022. School Counselors will also meet with each student individually for their Academic and Career Planning meeting and to review their course requests for the 2022-2023 school year.

Please contact your child’s school counselor if you have any questions or concerns.

Signs of Suicide Training for Parents

GHS will offer a virtual parent education seminar on the signs of suicide on Tuesday, March 1st, 2022 from 5:15 - 6:15 pm. We will cover some of the primary warning signs that indicate a child may be considering suicide and strategies for how to respond. If you would like to attend, please look for a Google Form in the Bulldog Bulletin next week.

If you have any questions about this event, please contact Allison Mears at amears@glnd.k12.va.us.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

The GCPS mental health team members will offer Youth Mental Health First Aid courses throughout the 2021-2022 school year to all interested parents, caregivers, and adult community members. This training is designed for adults who have frequent contact with youth, such as parents, school staff, coaches, volunteers, and community members. Check out the website at https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/ to learn more about the program! We have one more training session scheduled for February 18th, 2022. If you want to sign up or receive more information, please reach out ASAP to one of our certified instructors listed below.
