Cell Phone Policy - 2nd Semester

Our faculty and staff have noticed an uptick in cell phone use during instructional time throughout the first semester. As a result, our administrative team has developed a new cell phone policy to minimize distractions during instructional time. Starting on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022, we will implement our new classroom cell phone policy. The new policy only applies to instructional time, so students may continue to use cell phones during hallway transitions, Bulldog Block, and lunchtime. Click HERE for a copy of the GHS Spring 2022 Classroom Cell Phone Policy.

Our team will clarify our new cell phone policy with our students during our virtual meeting on Monday, January 10th. Again, our goal is to limit the number of distractions during instructional time to maximize the potential of every learner. We look forward to our continued partnership with our students and their parents to uphold the standard of excellence at Goochland High School.

Curriculum Night (Virtual)

Attention current 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students and parents: GHS will host our annual Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 26th, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. To allow the greatest possible participation for our families, we have decided to hold this as a virtual event via Google Meet. We will begin the night with our school counseling session that will focus on graduation requirements and guidance on how to complete the course selection process. Next week, I will send out our Curriculum Night website to access our virtual meeting links in my Bulldog Bulletin. We hope that the convenience of logging in from the comfort of your home will entice students and parents to participate in this informational event.

We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Patio Expansion Completed

We recently received the excellent news that the patio project is complete! That means that we will resume our regular entrance and exit routine with students entering and exiting through door 7 in the cafeteria. We ask that students and parents plan accordingly, as this will allow us to provide greater security for our students and staff during the morning arrival and afternoon dismissal process.

Report Card Distribution

We will distribute report cards during Bulldog Block on Friday, January 14th. This date changed from my message last week due to the school closures. If students are absent from their Bulldog Block, they should check in with their Bulldog Block teacher or school counselor to receive their report card.

Tardy Clean Sweeps

To ensure that our students report to class on time and maximize our instructional time, we will implement a new tardy policy. Starting on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022, we will conduct random tardy clean sweeps. Here are the details you need to know:

  • After the tardy bell rings, we will announce that we will begin a tardy clean sweep over the PA.
  • All teachers will close and lock their doors once they hear the announcement.
  • Teachers will not allow students to enter the classroom and direct them to the cafeteria.
  • Teachers will not allow students to exit their classrooms for any reason during the clean sweep to enable our administrators to process the students caught in the clean sweep.
  • Once administrators have swept through the hallways and bathrooms, they will assign lunch detention to any students caught in the clean sweep without a valid pass.
  • After administrators complete the disciplinary process, students caught in the sweep will return to their classrooms with a pass from administration.
  • If students have a tardy clean sweep pass, teachers will allow them into their classrooms.
  • Once the tardy clean sweep is over, administrators will make another announcement to inform everyone that the sweep has concluded.

Our team will continue to work with our students and parents during the first week of the second semester to clarify school expectations regarding the tardy clean sweep process. We will also cover this information in our virtual meeting with students on Monday, January 10th. We ask that parents discuss the importance of arriving to class on time with their children.

We look forward to our continued partnerships with our students, parents, and community members to uphold the standards of excellence at Goochland High School.

VDOE Survey

In cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, Goochland High School is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions of students, teachers, and staff between February 14th and March 4th. The purpose of this survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in our school. Please look for an email later this week with the details of the survey.

Virtual Student Meeting

As stated previously, the GHS administrative team will hold a virtual student meeting during Bulldog Block on Monday, January 10th. This is a change from my previous message, as a result of the school closures last week. During this meeting, we will discuss our new classroom cell phone policy and tardy clean sweeps, review school expectations, and provide students with resources if they need help.

We look forward to meeting with our students to clarify expectations and offer student supports as we close out the 2021-22 school year.
