💥💥💥Student Recognitions💥💥💥

Congratulations to the Bulldog Golf Team! They took the regional title this past week in Front Royal in a playoff with Brentsville High School. Will Gravely led the Bulldogs with a 74 and Luke Manno followed closely with a 76. Henry Vazales (78) and Michael Monahan (80) rounded out the scoring. The team has advanced to the state tournament for the second year in a row. They will travel to Williamsburg on Wednesday, October 9th.

Academic Awards Night

Academic Awards Night will be Monday, October 23rd at 6:30 pm in the Goochland High School Auditorium. This evening we will celebrate the academic achievements of our students from last school year including AP Scholars, Book Awards, Academic Letter Awards (honor roll), College Board National Recognition, and our students in honor societies. School Counseling will send out a thrill share message on October 9th if your child will be recognized at this event. All students and parents are welcome to attend!  

AP Exam Registration

Students in Advanced Placement Courses have the option to take the AP exam associated with that course.  Higher scores on the exam can result in possible college credit depending on the college/university. AP exams are held in May; however, the College Board (the governing body of Advanced Placement Courses) requires registration by mid-November. There are fees associated with the test. Tests are $98 dollars per exam. If your student qualifies for free or reduced lunch, the exam price is $63. Payment is made to GHS.  We will then pay the College Board. Paper copies for registration with detailed information will go home with students this week. An online version can be found HERE. Registration forms are due to GHS by Friday,  November 10th! All Night Graduation

  • ANG will be hosting a tailgate on Wednesday, October 4th at 5:30 pm before the annual Homecoming Week Powderpuff football game. ANG will provide cornhole and music on the grass outside of the stadium by the home team bleachers. Each senior wearing their “Class of ‘24” t-shirt will receive a FREE meal! Please make any donations to the tailgate HERE!

  • Do you know what All Night Graduation is and how it can benefit your senior student? Please attend the next meeting on Wednesday, October 25th at 6:30 pm at Mi Jalisco.

  • Noel November is right around the corner, and we are looking for VENDORS! If you love craft shows/bazaars, then this might interest you. Please reach out to Goochlandang@gmail.com for more details. This event will take place on Saturday, November 4th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

  • Do you love to play BINGO? Are you a Veteran? Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 11th! More details to come but get ready for another fun night of Bingo at GHS.

College Application Workshops

School Counseling will be hosting a college application workshop on Monday, October 9th, and Tuesday, October 10th during your senior’s English class.  This will be an opportunity for your child to work on their college applications with the help of the School Counseling team and our GRASP advisor.  If you have any questions about the college application process, please contact your child’s school counselor.  

Custodian Appreciation Day

Please join me in recognizing our amazing custodians at Goochland High School during National Custodial Appreciation Day which is on Monday, October 2nd, 2022. Our outstanding staff consists of Mr. Cox, E. Dabney, H. Shelton, Mr. Jackson, Ms. Pleasants, Mr. Richards, Ms. Senegar, and Mr. Waddy. They are the folks who keep our building sanitary and clean throughout the school year, and we truly appreciate all they do to support our Bulldog Family. If you see them in the hallways or after school during an event, please take a moment to thank them for all they do.

End of Marking Period 1

The end of our first marking period of the school year is Wednesday, October 11th. Please take some time to view your child’s current grades in PowerSchool before the end of the quarter. Feel free to communicate with their teachers if you have any questions.

Fire Rescue Show

The Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services is hosting a Fire-Rescue Show at Goochland High School on Saturday, October 14th at 5:00 pm. They are planning an evening of fire and EMS demonstrations for Goochland County citizens and their children. It’s also a kick-off to Fire Prevention Week. To top it all off, a small fireworks show is planned for the end of the evening. This is a great opportunity to promote community risk reduction while showcasing the department. Please consider coming out and spending an evening with your local Firefighters and EMS providers.

  • Spirit Week Days:

    • Monday, October 2nd - Anything but a backpack

    • Tuesday, October 3rd - Tailgate Tuesday

    • Wednesday, October 4th - Country vs. Country Club

    • Thursday, October 5th - Throwback Thursday

    • Friday, October 6th - Bold Red & Gold

  • Dance Guest Forms: Guest forms are available starting Monday, September 25th in the office and Mrs. Tate’s room on the history hallway, E163. All guest forms are due on Wednesday, October 4th.

  • Powderpuff Football Game: Attention 11th and 12th-grade females: Sign up for the annual Powderpuff football game beginning on Monday, September 25th at 8:45 am in the main office. Spots are limited to 24 players per grade level and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Anyone interested in playing will also need to attend a meeting during Bulldog Block on Friday, September 29th in the gym. The game will take place on Wednesday, October 4th at 7:00 pm at the stadium. If you have any questions please reach out to Mr. Funkhouser (jfunkhouser@glnd.k12.va.us). 

  • Pep Rally: The pep rally will take place on Friday, October 6th. If your student would prefer to not attend, please fill out this quick form for Ms. Hudak. Thank you!

  • Floats: Does your club or sports team want to create a float for our Homecoming Parade before the Homecoming Game on Friday, October 6th? Reach out to Mrs. Tate (rtate@glnd.k12.va.us) for more information. We can't wait to see your Bulldog pride on Friday, October 6th!

  • Hallway Decorating: Grade-level hallways may be decorated by students from 3:40 - 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 5th. No decorations can be on floors or hang more than 2 feet from the ceiling. Clean-up will begin at 7:30 pm and no new decorations may go up on the walls after 7:45 pm. Hallways must be clear of students and supplies at 8:00 pm.

  • Dance Ticket Sales: Tickets for the Homecoming Dance will be available for purchase starting October  2nd - 6th during lunches. Tickets are $10 each and can only be purchased by cash or check. Non-GHS guests must have a dance guest form submitted before having a ticket purchased for them. Tickets will not be sold at the door!

  • Dance: The Homecoming Dance will take place on Saturday, October 7th from 7:00 - 10:00 pm in the GHS gym. Please be aware that bags and water bottles will be checked in by GHS staff at the entrance. Students will not be permitted to go out to their cars and return to the dance. We appreciate your cooperation as we prioritize the well-being of our students! Water and light refreshments will be provided and Kona Ice will be available for purchase, beginning at 8:00 pm.

GRASP Advisor

GHS would like to welcome Ms. Lindsay Bradley, our new GRASP Advisor.  She will be available on Mondays and Tuesdays to help families with financial aid and scholarship advising.  You may email her at goochland@grasp4va.org or schedule an appointment.  

Kindness Campaign

October is Bullying Prevention Month and for this month, we will be promoting one of our core values, kindness, at GHS.  We will have a weekly quote on our announcements and ask teachers to catch students who are demonstrating kindness to let us know so those students can be recognized.  We will also have a Kindness Campaign from October 23rd - October 27th.

GHS will celebrate Unity Day by wearing orange on Tuesday, October 24th (Unity Day is actually October 18th, but we will be in intercessions that week).  The goal of Unity Day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community.  

Matthew Smiles Color Run

Please sign up HERE to participate on behalf of the Matthew Smiles Foundation and Goochland Parks & Rec. It will be held on Saturday, October 7th at 8:00 am at Hidden Rock Park. The registration fee will be $30.

NASA Opportunities for Students

The Virginia Space Grant Consortium provides FREE NASA-related programs for Virginia's high school students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The programs have an interactive online STEM learning experience and are highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA.

10th GRADE

Virginia Space Coast Scholars (VSCS) focuses on the current missions flown or managed by NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. http://vsgc.odu.edu/spacecoast/ - This online course application is OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 16th.

11th AND 12th GRADE

Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) focuses on NASA’s human spaceflight missions and the Journey to the Moon and onto Mars. Students can earn up to five free dual-enrollment college credits.  http://vsgc.odu.edu/VASTS/, applications are OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 24th.

Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS) focuses on the challenges of the next generation of scientists and engineers to become part of the solution to the societal issues faced by the impacts of climate change. Engaging students in real-world investigations of the Earth and its systems using the latest research and data from NASA. Students can earn up to five free transferable dual enrollment college credits  http://vsgc.odu.edu/VESSS applications are OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 24th. 

Parent/Teacher Conferences

The teachers at Goochland High School are looking forward to meeting with you during Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, October 12th, from 11:00 AM- 6:00 PM.

Parents will be able to make appointments with teachers for the Parent-Teacher Conferences online. You have the option to meet in person or request a Google Meet link to meet virtually. You will be able to register by visiting the following link:

PSAT Testing

On Wednesday, October 12th, we will be administering the PSAT test to students who opted in for this assessment.  Registration for this testing has closed.  Doors will open to testers at 8:00 am and testing will begin at 8:30 am.  All students should enter through the front doors, including student drivers.

PTSA Update

Our GHS PTSA has been working hard to get back up and going over the last several weeks. They will be hosting a faculty appreciation luncheon during the Parent/Teacher Conference day on Thursday, October 12th to show their appreciation and support for Goochland High School staff. 

The PTSA is asking that you help show appreciation by donating food, and utensils or by signing up to volunteer. You can also show your support by making a cash donation towards the luncheon. 

The PTSA is asking for all items to be delivered to Goochland High School by Wednesday, October 11th. The administrative staff will take the receipt of the donated items and store them for safekeeping.  You can do so by completing the following survey.

SAT Updates

Do you have a senior who would like one more attempt at the SAT? Do you have a junior looking to take the test for the first time? Goochland High School is a test center site for the Saturday, November 4th SAT assessment. Registration will close on Friday, October 20th. Register HERE.

Interested in free SAT Prep? Goochland High School is offering 9th - 12th grade students an opportunity to prepare for this assessment through a week-long morning-only intercession course this October. Senior Advertisements

Those families wishing to buy an ad in the yearbook for their senior can do so HERE. Once you select and pay for your desired ad size, you can create and design the ad in Balfour’s online program. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Mistler (kmistler@glnd.k12.va.us). 

Senior Pictures (Make-ups)

Senior portrait make-up day is scheduled for Monday, October 16th. You should have received an email from Prestige Photography by Lifetouch with scheduling information. You can also access the sign-up directly by going to prestigeportraits.com. 

If you only want the yearbook poses, you can sign up for an Evolution Session, bypass prepaying online by selecting “Pay at your Session” and request a Yearbook Only Session when you get to the camera on picture day.

If you took pictures in August, but want to schedule a retake, please email Mrs. Mistler (kmistler@glnd.k12.va.us) to get that process started. Only those who have not yet taken portraits with Lifetouch will be sent emails from Lifetouch.

If you plan on taking your portraits with an outside photographer, please plan to have a digital file sent to Mrs. Mistler (kmistler@glnd.k12.va.us) by Friday, December 1st. The requirements for senior portraits taken with other photographers are a blue background; vertical, formal poses; 300 dpi; and wallet-size crop.

Those who have already taken senior portraits need to select their yearbook pose! Log in to your account on Lifetouch to select which formal pose you’d like to appear in the yearbook! If you don’t do this by Friday, December 1st, then the yearbook staff will do it for you.

Underclass Pictures 

Underclass pictures will be taken on Thursday, October 26th, and Friday, October 27th. Freshmen and sophomores will take pictures through PE classes. Juniors will take pictures through English classes. Students can pick up a picture form from their PE or English teachers later in the month. The underclassmen's make-up day will be Tuesday, November 28th

Yearbook

Please consider purchasing your 2023-2024 yearbook for $60 HERE! This fantastic deal expires on Monday, January 1st. After this date, prices will increase to $70. Make sure to order your yearbook through the Balfour website or scan any QR code on the yearbook signs in the school. Please contact Mrs. Mistler (kmistler@glnd.k12.va.us) if you have any questions. We will have a spring release this year, so yearbooks will be in your hands before we leave for the summer!
