Advance College Academy (ACA) Applications

Advance College Academy (ACA) is a dual enrollment program between Goochland High School and Reynolds Community College that allows students to earn a transferable associate of science degree in social science while completing a high school advanced studies diploma. ACA applications are open for current 9th and 10th-grade students until Friday, September 29, 2023. Previously admitted students need not reapply. 

To be eligible for ACA admission, a student must complete Algebra II no later than 10th grade, a third year of language by the end of junior year, and be capable of maintaining a 3.0 high school GPA.

All Night Graduation

  • Attention 12th-grade parents - Do you know what All Night Graduation is and how it can benefit your senior student? Please attend the next meeting on Tuesday, September 12th at 6:30 pm at Bella Sicilia Italian Restaurant.

  • The senior class will be having a Car Wash on Saturday, September 16th from 8:00 am - 1:00 pm at the United Bank near Dunkin Donuts. Come grab some breakfast at Dunkin while we wash your car!  We need Seniors and Senior parents to help with this event. Please reach out to goochlandang@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer for this event. 

  • Noel November is right around the corner and we are looking for a Chair/Co-Chair! This event is a tradition for Goochland and would love to continue the tradition but we need someone to take this event and run with it. If you love craft shows/bazaars this might be something of interest for you. Please reach out to goochlandang@gmail.com for more details. This event will take place on Saturday, November 4th.

  • Do you love to play BINGO? Are you a Veteran? Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 11th! More details to come but get ready for another fun night of Bingo at GHS.

Attendance Awareness Month

GHS wants to inform families that September is Attendance Awareness Month. During September, we take time to highlight the importance of school attendance and its impact on student's future successes. When attendance is improved, so are academic achievements and graduation rates. Join us in talking with your students this month about the importance of regular school attendance and reflecting on your expectations for their attendance. Thank you in advance for your support! 

Backpacks for Love

Backpacks of Love, Inc. is a local charity that was formed to provide food for school children over the weekend. Children who are in need of such food will receive a small bag of food and snacks on the last day of the school week. The food exchange will be handled in a discreet manner where the student will pick up a bag of food from the front office on their way home. If you would like your child(ren) to participate in this program, please contact Kim Ford (kford@glnd.k12.va.us) or your child’s school counselor for a permission form.

Cell Phone Policy

As a reminder, students are not permitted to use cell phones during instructional time at Goochland High School. Parents, if you have an emergency and need to speak with your child immediately, please contact the main office at 804-556-5322. We ask that you please talk with your child about this at home. Thanks for your cooperation and support!

Class of ‘24 Graduation Details

Please mark your calendars for our GHS class of 2024 graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 8th at 7:30 pm at the GHS Stadium. The rain date will be Sunday, June 9th at 7:30 pm. We will have follow-up details in the coming months regarding the senior students last day of school, senior exam week, etc. 

Current Covid-19 Protocols

If your student tests positive for Covid-19, please notify Nurse Duffey (kduffey@glnd.k12.va.us). All individuals who test positive are still required to isolate outside of school for five days after symptoms first develop. If you have any questions, reach out to Nurse Duffey. Thank you!

Fire Rescue Show

The Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services is hosting a Fire-Rescue Show at Goochland High School on Saturday, October 14th, at 5:00 pm. They are planning an evening of fire and EMS demonstrations for Goochland County citizens and their children. It’s also a kick-off to Fire Prevention Week. To top it all off, a small fireworks show is planned to end of the evening. This is a great opportunity to promote community risk reduction while showcasing the department. Please consider coming out and spending an evening with your local Firefighters and EMS providers.

GCPS Fall Intersessions

Registration will open on September 11th  HERE for a week-long intersession opportunity from October 16-20, 2023. Goochland County Public Schools will be offering sessions where students will engage in multi-day learning experiences that combine research, creativity, and FUN. Please take a look at this frequently asked questions document for more information. 

Gifted College Panel Night

Attention parents and guardians of gifted students: On Tuesday, September 26th, the Va. Association for the Gifted will hold a virtual College Night Panel from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. If you would like to register, please visit https://www.vagifted.org/event/WSSep2023. Girl’s Basketball

Girls Basketball open gyms will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:15 pm in the GHS gym. All athletes need a completed VHSL physical to participate. Please see Coach Kempf (wkempf@glnd.k12.va.us) in room I207 with questions.

Homecoming Floats

Attention students! Does your club or sports team want to create a float for our Homecoming Parade before the Homecoming Game on Friday, October 6th? Reach out to Mrs. Tate (rtate@glnd.k12.va.us) for more information. We can't wait to see your Bulldog pride on Friday, October 6th!

Marking Period 1 Interim Grades

Please be mindful that the interim for Marking Period 1 is Wednesday, September 13th. Please take a moment to view your child’s assignments and grades in PowerSchool, and contact their teachers if you have any questions or concerns. They are here to help!

NASA Opportunities for Students

The Virginia Space Grant Consortium provides FREE NASA-related programs for Virginia's high school students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The programs have an interactive online STEM learning experience and are highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA.

10th GRADE

Virginia Space Coast Scholars (VSCS) focuses on the current missions flown or managed by NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. http://vsgc.odu.edu/spacecoast/ - This online course application is OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 16th.

11th AND 12th GRADE

Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) focuses on NASA’s human spaceflight missions and the Journey to the Moon and onto Mars. Students can earn up to five free dual-enrollment college credits.  http://vsgc.odu.edu/VASTS/, applications are OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 24th.

Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS) focuses on the challenges of the next generation of scientists and engineers to become part of the solution to the societal issues faced by the impacts of climate change. Engaging students in real-world investigations of the Earth and its systems using the latest research and data from NASA. Students can earn up to five free transferable dual enrollment college credits  http://vsgc.odu.edu/VESSS applications are OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 24th. 

Pink Out T-Shirts

SCA and MarketUp will be pre-selling Pink Out shirts for 20% off from Wednesday, September 13th - Thursday, September 14th during lunches. Get your $18 Pink Out shirts before the prices go up next week! This will be our theme for the home football game on Friday, September 22nd. Please see Ms. Tate in room E163 for more information.

Senior Pictures (Make-ups)

Seniors, if you missed the senior photo session over the summer, or need to retake your formal drape/tux photo, senior photo make-ups will be held at GHS on Monday, October 16th (the first day of Fall Break/intercessions). You should receive an email with scheduling information from Lifetouch approximately four weeks prior to the event. Feel free to email Mrs. Mistler (kmistler@glnd.k12.va.us) with questions.

Senior Projects

Seniors received information on the Goochland High School senior project this past week through their government classes. Students will receive a packet of information about senior project expectations, assignments, and due dates, all of which are available in the Senior Project section of the GHS Class of 2024 Canvas group. Proposals must be submitted no later than September 14th, 2023. Please note the following: Students must complete 24 hours of community service-oriented work by mid-May. Students will not be permitted to walk at the GHS graduation ceremony if they do not complete their senior project. Lastly, Education for Employment and Blue Ridge Virtual Governor's School students complete a separate senior project through those experiences. Society of Women Engineers at UVA

The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites high schoolers to apply to their High School Visitation program on Saturday, October 21st held on campus.. The program provides young women high school students a comprehensive look at engineering fields and UVA’s engineering curriculum through informative speakers, an interactive design activity, tours, and much more. The program is designed to benefit participants with all levels of engineering experience, but we particularly target those students who are not yet familiar with the field and may be interested in applying to engineering schools or pursuing a STEM career. 

To apply, students should complete the HSV Fall 2023 Application which can be found here. Students who have previously applied to HSV, are in the targeted grade level, and demonstrate a strong interest in engineering through their short answer questions will receive priority acceptance.  

The attached information packet provides more information about the event and instructions on how to apply online through the website. The online application must be completed by 11:59 pm on Sunday, September 24th.

Staff Recognitions

Please take a moment to nominate one of our GHS staff members for a September BARKS award. All nominated teachers will be notified of their nominations. Two specific staff members will be selected and celebrated at our faculty meeting on Friday, September 15th. This has been a tradition at GHS but will be new this year as we are allowing students and families to make nominations. We look forward to reviewing the responses!

Student Holiday/Teacher Workday

Please mark your calendars for Friday, September 15th, as it is a student holiday. Teachers will participate in professional development that day. We look forward to providing our staff with opportunities to improve their craft.

Yearbook

Please consider purchasing your 2023-2024 yearbook for $60 HERE! This fantastic deal expires on Monday, January 1st. After this date, prices will increase to $70. Make sure to order your yearbook through the Balfour website or scan any QR code on the yearbook signs in the school. Please contact Mrs. Mistler (kmistler@glnd.k12.va.us) if you have any questions. We will have a spring release this year, so yearbooks will be in your hands before we leave for the summer!
