The GHS FFA came in 4th place in the state for the hay bale decorating contest at the State Fair of Virginia. The students who pitched in for the contest were: Kaytlin Hawk, Lindsey Shepard, Cole Bashinski, Austin Hawk, Parker Forcke, Michael Fitzgerald and Jacob Flanagan. The GHS FFA will compete in the Forestry Field Day at the State Fair on Tuesday, September 27th in the Natural Resources area of the fair grounds (if there is rain it will be held in the sheep tent) starting at 10:30am. Thank you to Maid Clean Janitorial for sponsoring our team!
The Goochland Special Education Parent/Teacher Committee (SEAC) needs representation from Goochland High School.
If you are a Parent:
- Does your child have an Individual Education Plan (IEP)?
- Do you think your child may need special education services?
- Do you wonder what other resources may help your child?
If you are a Teacher or Staff Member:
- Do you work with students with IEPs?
- Are you looking for additional resources to help your students?
SEAC meetings are the place to go to help you find those answers and raise questions/concerns you may be experiencing. Each meeting includes and update from Jennifer Waggener (Director Exceptional Ed.), a guest speaker on a topic selected by parents or teacher, and a public comment period. Their first meeting of the school year is this Monday, September 26th at 6pm at the Goochland County School Board Office. Please see the attached flyer for dates and topics for the remainder of the school year.
Participating in class has a huge impact on a student’s academic success, for this reason September has been designated as Attendance Awareness Month. Attendance is essential to school success, and families play a key role in making sure students get to school on time every day. Chronic absence–missing 10 percent of the school year, or just 2-3 days every month–can translate to third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing courses, and ninth-graders dropping out of high school. GHS is committed to spreading awareness about how attendance directly impacts a student’s success in school. We invite you to read the attached handout, “Pay Attention to Attendance: Build the Habit of Good Attendance” to learn more about how attendance can impact a student’s success in school and to access tools for you to help prioritize attendance in your family. We look forward to working with you this school year in making school attendance a priority!
Parents: Have you been keeping up with your student’s classes on Schoology? If you would like more detailed information about assignments and class materials, sign up for a parent Schoology account. It only takes a few minutes. If you do not have a parent code yet, request one from any of your student’s teachers, then follow the instructions on the Schoology support page.
Back to School Night is tomorrow night from 5:30-7pm. We invite you to come meet your son’s or daughter’s teachers and learn about the wonderful things we are doing in our classrooms each day. Teachers will provide visiting parents with a course overview and answer questions about the curriculum and assignments. We will host a parent/teacher night after report cards are distributed in October for specific grading questions.
