The GHS PTSA will host a Sadie Hawkins Dance on Saturday, February 17th. Students, mark your calendars now and make plans to attend. All proceeds from the event will go toward our SOLabration and Senior class picnic at the end of the year. Last year we had a blast dancing the night away, so don’t miss out!
Goochland High School will host Career Day on Tuesday, February 13th from 8:30 to 12:00. Mr. Watson, our Director of Career and Technical Education, has worked extremely hard to make the event a huge success. We now have over 75 organizations from around the Richmond/Metro area scheduled to attend the event. We have an interactive lesson plan, where students will use a Twitter hashtag for an opportunity to win prizes! Parents, please make sure that your son or daughter is in attendance for this great opportunity to network with local business owners.
This week we celebrate our School Counselors during National School Counseling Week! Secondary school counselors enhance the learning process and promote academic achievement. This week at GHS, we want to thank Laurie Deadrick (Grasp and Soar Advisor), Beth Fowler, Doug Getter, Ashton Guza and Taylor Reahard (ACA Career Coach) for their hard work and dedication to provide our students with outstanding support. Please join me by taking a moment this week to let them know how much you appreciate them!
During February, GHS is excited to celebrate Black History Month through our “American Legacies: An African-American Perspective” program. Each day of February we will highlight one famous national or state African-American via our student News 2 broadcast. Students in US History and Government classes will prepare slideshows highlighting the accomplishments of African-Americans and the Civil Rights movement, while students in Ceramics and Art classes will create artwork inspired through their research of Black History. During the week of February 19th, the slideshows and artwork will be on display during lunches. In addition, our Step Team will performs during lunches on February 21st, our chorus will sing songs inspired by African Americans on February 22nd, and our jazz band will play music inspired by African American jazz musicians on February 23rd. We are extremely excited to celebrate the accomplishments of these great American heroes!
Last Tuesday night the School Board officially approved Bryan Gordon’s retirement as Activities Director at GHS. Coach Gordon has been a staple of this high school and our community and has led our program to tremendous successes over his many years of service. While we are extremely sad to see Coach Gordon leave us, we are grateful for his leadership, friendship and generosity. Please see the GCPS Press Release for details.
