The 2016 Peace Essay Contest

Theme:  Learning Peacemaking from Nature

The natural world has many examples of plants and animals living together cooperatively.  Find and describe one or more instances of this.  What lessons about cooperation and peacemaking could humans learn from nature?  How might we apply those lessons to peacemaking in our families, our community and our world?

  • First Prize — $100
  • Second Prize — $50
  • Third Prize — $25
  • Five Honorable Mentions — $10

Prizes awarded in 4 grade divisions:  K-2, 3-5, Middle (6-8), and High School (9-12)

  • Open to elementary, middle, or high school student in Virginia.
  • Prizes awarded at each school level:  K-2, 3-5, Middle (6-8), and High School.
  • Entries judged on content, composition, style and grammar, with emphasis on the content and creativity of the ideas expressed.
  • Deadline for entries:  April 25, 2016
  • Submit two copies of each entry, along with completed entry form. (Visit http://www.rpec.org for the entry form or pick up in School Counseling)
  • Each entry must be the original work of the student author.
  • Winners will be notified on or before June 1, 2016

Aunt Berta’s Education Foundation – 16th Annual Minority Law and Research Institute (MLARI)

Minority Law and Research Institute

Program Overview

The Minority Law and Research Institute activities will further enhance the mission of the Foundation by having a major impact on the educational future of the students participating in the program and hopefully will help increase the number of African-American law school candidates.

The activities that will be conducted for the Law and Research institute will provide students with many of the skills, strategies and initiatives needed to prepare them for careers in Law and the legal profession.  The program will also help students overcome the many dynamics that plague minority youth.

Students participating in the program will be exposed to concepts, instructional strategies, and research projects in the legal profession.

Instructor and administrator will spend two days in preparation for the institute.  And additional two will be spent at the conclusion of the institute for evaluation and assessment.

Goals and Objectives of the Law and Research Institute

Goal:  To prepare under-represented students to consider careers in Law and the legal profession and other academic studies.

Objectives:  To increase student aptitude, research and performance on standardized tests and provide them with a broad array of information related to law, the legal profession and other academic studies.

To increase student interest in the field of Law and other academic studies.

To Be Eligible:

To be eligible to participate in MLARI:

  1. All students must pre-qualify to be eligible (time, date, and place to be announced for pre-qualifying).
  2. Applications will be received until May 1, 2016.
  3. A photo is required with each application.
  4. A $60.00 non-refundable application fee payable to Aunt Berta’s Kids Education Foundation is due once the student is accepted.
  5. Forward a recommendation letter from a history, government instructor or a school administrator.
  6. Send an official high school transcript.
  7. Send an official college transcript (college students only)
  8. Include a short statement of 50 words about “Why You Are Interested In Learning More about the Law and the Legal Profession.”
  9. Have a grade point average of 2.7 or better to be eligible
  10. Include a 150-word essay on “Why You Should Be Given The Opportunity to Attend MLARI 2016”

What Does It Cost

Tuition, room and board will be provided free fro all selected participants.  Participants will be required to pay a non-refundable $60.00 application fee once they are accepted.  The students will be housed in supervised residence halls at Southern University and will be provided three meals a day at no cost to the students.  Students are required to pay approx.  $386.00 for their own transportation to and from Southern University in Baton Rouge and will be responsible for personal expenses.  Students will have access to campus resources including the libraries.

School News

GHS STEM Camp

This summer GHS students will have the opportunity to design and build using their engineering skills and interest. Students will engineer/manufacture a mini-hover craft using a CNC router, 3D printer, plastic thermo-former, laser cutter/engraver, and electronics components. In addition, students will take field trips to engineering and manufacturing facilities such as the Rolls Royce plant where aircraft engines are built, McGuire Veteran’s hospital to see first hand how 3D printing is helping disabled veterans, and the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing. 

The GHS STEM camp will be held June 20-24, 2016 from 8:30-11:30, with extended days possible due to the field trips. Lunch will be provided on the extended days.  The cost for the camp is $120 and is limited to 20 students.
