Goochland Players Presents The Music Man

Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 7.25.59 PM
The Goochland High School Drama Department will present the musical The Music Man on April 29, April 30, and May 1 in the Goochland High School auditorium.
The beloved classic, with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson, gave the world some of musical theater’s most memorable songs, including “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” and “Til There Was You.”
Neil Burch, who has led the Drama Department at Goochland since 2011, directs The Music Man, and Casey Rogers, Chemistry teacher at Goochland High School, is the producer. The orchestra will be conducted by  Jay Sykes, who leads the Band program at GHS. Kim Watts, who teaches music at Goochland Elementary School, is the vocal director. Choreography is by Jamie Beatty, who teaches fifth grade at Byrd Elementary.
The Music Man, set in 1912, tells the story of con man Harold Hill, who comes to River City, Iowa to sell the townspeople everything they need for a boys’ marching band: instruments, uniforms and Hill’s unique “think system” for learning music. Once everything is paid for, he’ll take the money and run. Hill’s scheme runs into trouble when he meets Marian Paroo, the town librarian and piano teacher. She sees through his fast-talking charm, leaving Hill with no choice but to romance Marian into forgetting her suspicions.
“The Music Man is a classic musical comedy that has been loved by many generations,” said Burch. “We love this show because the characters are vivacious and the plot is warming. One of its underlying themes is the power of positivity. Although he is a con, Harold Hill’s positive approach to selling band instruments brings the community of River City closer together. Like Harold, the Goochland Drama Department is built on the power of positivity. Thus, I thought this would be a good, light-hearted show to share with the Goochland Drama community.”
This staging of The Music Man is one of the Goochland Players’ most ambitious. There are over 60 cast members, ranging from grades five through twelve, and they represent all five of Goochland County’s public schools, making this a true community event.
Evening performances of The Music Man are at 7:00 p.m. April 29 and 30, with a matinee at 2:30 p.m. on May 1. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. While they can be purchased at the door, GHS recommends reserving your tickets using our online form and paying for them at the Will Call window.

The Shelton Leadership Challenge

Hampden-Sydney College wants to help young men develop the tools to become better leaders. That’s why we’re inviting promising young men to apply for the Shelton Leadership Challenge—an intense and selective six-day residential summer camp. I’m asking you today to help us identify a few outstanding young men for our upcoming session.
During the SLC, we guarantee that participants will be challenged—physically, mentally, and psychologically. Attendees will take onleadership positions and participate in team-building activities (like ropes courses and focused discussions). They will tackle a service project with other campers and further develop their leadership potential.
The SLC is a selective program for students who have a 3.0 or higher G.P.A. (un-weighted). The program will take place from June 26 through July 1, 2016, on the Hampden-Sydney College campus. Cost to attend the program is $600 for the week; this cost covers room, board and all activities.
You can learn more about the Shelton Leadership Challenge now.
