American College Foundation Visionary Scholarship Program

Awards:  Multiple Winners Ranging from $1,000 to $5,000

Eligible High School Students:  Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors

Application Deadline:  2016-2017 Award Year:  April 1, 2016

How to Apply:  http://www.AmericanCollegeFoundation.org

All applications for the American College Foundation (“ACF”) Visionary Scholarship Program will consist of:  1) a completed ACF Visionary Scholarship Application, 2) a copy of the student’s most recent unofficial high school transcript, 3) a 500 word, typed double-spaced essay.  All components of the application must be received for a student to be eligible for an award.  Applications are judged on the ability to follow guidelines (25%), grammar and punctuation (25%), and the merit of the written essay (50%).  Applicants must be United States Citizens or Eligible Non-Citizens and may be asked to participate in a qualification interview as part of the application process to assist the ACF in ultimately determining the winners.  Awards range from $1,000 – $5,000 each; multiple winners to be selected.  Each award is a non-renewable, one-time award and is to be used exclusively to offset costs and fees related directly to the student’s first year of higher post-secondary education at an accredited institution of the student’s choosing within the United States.  Relatives of the American College Foundation Staff are NOT eligible to apply.

QuestBridge for the 2016 College Prep Scholars Program

QuestBridge for the 2016 College Prep Scholars Program

The deadline for students to apply is March 23, 2016

QuestBridge is a nationally recognized nonprofit that has connected more than 13,000 high-achieving, low-income students with full four-year scholarships or generous financial aid to attend the nation’s best colleges.  These students have advanced to become leaders in their workplaces and communities, and many of them started their paths to success as College Prep Scholars.

The College Prep Scholars Program gives talented 11th graders the preparation they need to not only get into top colleges, but possibly attend for free.  Here’s what you need to know:

  • Who is qualified to be a College Prep Scholar?  A high school junior, typically with an unweighted GPA pf 3.5 or above in the most challenging courses, whose family earns less than $65,000 annually (for a typical family of four).
  • What can College Prep Scholars receive?  Full scholarships to summer programs at schools like Yale and Stanford • Personalized college essay review • An exclusive invitation to a National College Admissions Conference to interact with admissions officers from top colleges • All-expense-paid campus visits • Specialized guidance and a head start on applying to college • Distinction as a competitive candidate for admission to their college partners • Plus more!
  • How do students apply?  The free online application, available at http://www.questbridge.org in mid-February, is due on March 23, 2016.

The National Institute of American History and Democracy (NIAHD)

The National Institute of American History and Democracy (NIAHD), a joint project of the College of William & Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, invites your students to apply to our NIAHD Pre-Collegiate Summer Program in Early American History.  The highly successful Pre-Collegiate Program accepts students who will be rising juniors, rising seniors, and graduating seniors by this summer.  Students earn four hours of college credit for an exciting, in-depth study in early American history.  In the past 14 summers they have enrolled more than 1,500 students from 46 states, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and South America.

They will offer two three-week sessions:  June 26-July 16, 2016 and July17-August 6, 2016.  Students may take either of the following courses in either session:

  • HIS 217:  American History from Jamestown through the American Revolution
  • HIS 218:  American History from the American Revolution through the Civil War.

Students will study early American history “on site” through the use of historic places, including surviving structures, archaeology sites, and museums.  Students will participate in daily discussion seminars, analyze readings by acclaimed scholars, expand their analytical writing skills in weekly themes, and compare and contrast historic sites with interpretations by renowned historians.  Students will live in a dorm and experience campus life under the guidance of a large William & Mary staff.

They seek highly motivated students who demonstrate a commitment to learning, curiosity about the past, excellent analytical ability, good writing skills, and the potential to thrive in a competitive, structured, discussion-class format.  A particular background in American history is not required.  An open mind, independent thinking, creativity, and a spirit of adventure are the essential ingredients.

Students may visit their web site at http://www.wm.edu/niahd to download applicable forms including the Application, Teacher Recommendation form, Financial Aid form, and In-State Domicile form.  The application requires a short essay plus an official high school transcript.  Partial scholarships based on demonstrated need are available.
